A few weeks back I saw FILTER live at Gramercy Theater in NYC. It was a spur of the moment occurrence and I didn’t know what to expect. Filter was amazing as always, but there was a new band that stole the spotlight for me that night. A band that stole the moment and truly showed me that rock music is indeed multi-dimensional. MENEW captivated me enough to push for an interview and pick their minds to see where they come from.

Soulfly, who have been in the news of late due to the combination of the new material that they just released and the recent bout of Bell's Palsy that frontman Max Cavalera has experienced, are embarking on a spring tour and will be hitting the Tri-State area next month! The band, known and loved for their thematically-charged lyrics and signature sound, have had shaky but consistent success. Over the years the band has gone through several roster changes, with with drummer David Kinkade and bassist Tony Campos both joining the band less than a year ago, back in July and August 2011, respectively.

There was something in the air on the night of March 8th. A feeling, an energy emitted off the crowd which consisted of mostly males from their mid 20’s to early 50’s. An air of frustration, an attitude of the forgotten, and a need to vent and let loose was boiling under each and everyone’s skin. All they needed was the spark, the catalyst if you will, to ignite a flame that would stay with us for days to come.

The Filter backdrop suddenly dropped behind the drum set giving the crowd a reason to cheer. Out of the darkness, the band crept on stage and took their rightful place amongst our forgotten generation. We all felt the high voltage. We all smelled the sweet scent of release about to transpire. The catchy, heavy riff into to “Welcome to the Fold” burst into our awaiting ear-drums. The crowd was swollen with overdue anticipation, yet no pits, no crowd surfing.  I grew restless.

On Thursday night, I walked into the Gramercy Theater not knowing what to expect. Having been called on at the last minute to cover Alt-Rock veterans Filter, I hadn’t had the necessary time to preview the catalog of the opening acts, Evan Russell Saffer & MENEW. As it turns out, I’m glad I didn’t.

The venue: small. The crowd: stiff and cold. Half of the concert-goers were already drunk and itching for Filter’s headlining set, early in the night. The first act comes on, an unfamiliar act by the name of “Evan Russell Saffer”, which turns out to be basically a one-man band. As always, I throw all judgments aside and open up my mind and ears. I found it enjoyable, despite the crowd’s predominantly disinterested demeanor.

Pioneers of modern alternative rock FILTER continue to inspire and reach out.

In a recent phone interview, Tri-State Rock had the privilege of talking to Filter frontman, Richard Patrick. When a band has as much success and influence on the music scene as Filter has, the members sometimes seem a bit “holier than thou”. Patrick, however, was a perfect example on how good guys indeed can have success while remaining humble and awesome!
